Market Validation

China

Before you invest in China, test China.

Validate your brand with the right Chinese consumers before making a major market commitment.

SALT helps global premium brands test product relevance, pricing, positioning and market potential through carefully curated consumer access and real-world validation.

China is too important to enter on assumptions.

There is usually a wide gap between proven success in an established market and any real certainty about China. Most brands close that gap after they have committed, not before.

  • Consumer expectations may differ from your home market.
  • Premium positioning does not always translate directly.
  • Pricing may need to be read against unfamiliar reference points.
  • The most obvious customer segment may not be the right one.
  • Launch investment often happens before any meaningful consumer evidence exists.

We help brands replace assumptions with real consumer evidence.

What can we help you understand?

  • 01

    Demand

Is there genuine interest in this product among the consumer it is intended for?

  • 02

    Positioning

Does the brand story and value proposition carry, or does it need to be told differently here?

  • 03

    Pricing

How is the proposed price read by the target audience, and against what reference points?

  • 04

    Audience

Which type of consumer responds most strongly — and is it the one you expected?

  • 05

    Competitive context

Which brands and products do consumers spontaneously compare you with?

  • 06

    Barriers

What holds a buyer back — and is it the product, the price, the story or the context?

  • 07

    Next move

What should be tested next, before a larger China commitment is made?

China Premium Validation Sprint.

A focused engagement that puts your product in front of a carefully curated group of relevant consumers and turns real consumer response into evidence for your next China decision. The timeline is defined according to the product, the target audience, the recruitment criteria and the validation scope.

  1. 01

    Define

Agree the target consumer, the strategic questions worth answering and the criteria the result will be judged against.

  2. 02

    Curate

Recruit a relevant group of affluent Chinese consumers through our direct network and established partner communities.

  3. 03

    Experience

Build the environment the product needs in order to be judged properly — private preview, small gathering or one-to-one testing.

  4. 04

    Listen

Collect structured qualitative and commercial feedback, including the parts that are uncomfortable to hear.

  5. 05

    Interpret

Read the signals commercially — what the responses mean for the business, and how much weight each one can carry.

  6. 06

    Recommend

A written recommendation for what to do or test next: proceed, adjust first, or wait.

The recommendation

  • Proceed

The evidence supports continued China market development.

  • Adjust

There is potential, but positioning, product, pricing, audience or route to market should be changed first.

  • Wait

The current evidence does not yet justify a major China investment.

We are not paid to tell every brand that China is a good idea. A recommendation to wait is a legitimate result, and it is worth more than a launch that should not have happened.

Access matters more than reach.

Premium-market validation is not about reaching the largest possible audience. It is about reaching the right one.

Direct network

Long-term relationships with a curated private network of approximately 800 to 1,000 premium consumers, built through luxury-brand events, VIP experiences and years of personal relationships.

Partner-based access

Additional audience access through established partnerships with premium consumer communities. These are relationships, not lists we own — participation is arranged with the partner, project by project.

  • Private banking communities
  • Yacht clubs and yachting communities
  • Golf clubs and golf communities
  • Supercar clubs and communities
  • Luxury-brand VIP communities

For each project, participants are selected against the specific consumer profile rather than recruited from a generic panel.

Note Audience access is curated on a project-by-project basis and is subject to relevance, location, audience criteria and partner participation. SALT does not own or sell consumer data, and no individual is identified to a client without their consent.

Illustrative example The following is a constructed illustration of how a validation would be shaped. It is not a completed SALT project, not a case study and not a client. Figures shown are part of the illustration only.

European premium travel brand.

A premium luggage brand is considering China. It is uncertain about how its positioning will be read and whether its price will be accepted.

How it would be shaped

  • Around twenty affluent Chinese frequent travellers
  • A private product experience rather than a presentation
  • Pricing feedback against the references they already use
  • Product and feature evaluation, in hand
  • Comparison against the travel brands they currently buy
  • Purchase-intent interviews
  • Analysis of which segment responded most strongly

What the brand receives

A written China Market Validation recommendation — proceed, adjust or wait — with the consumer evidence it rests on.

A recommended next step — such as pricing adjustment, focus on a specific consumer segment, cross-border launch testing, distributor exploration, further validation, or a decision to pause.

Market access, and the ability to execute in it.

SALT is not a research institution and not a large consultancy. What we bring is practical access to premium Chinese consumers, the experience to build an environment they will engage with honestly, and the ability to run it ourselves.

  • 01

    Premium brand experience

Years of work delivering brand and retail experiences in China for international and high-end brands.

  • 02

    Direct consumer relationships

Long-term relationships with premium consumers, built through luxury-brand events and VIP experiences rather than bought in.

  • 03

    Premium community access

Established relationships across the private banking, yachting, golf, supercar and luxury VIP ecosystems.

  • 04

    Local cultural reading

An understanding of how premium brand expectations translate into what Chinese consumers actually respond to.

  • 05

    Experience design and execution

The ability to turn a strategic question into a controlled, well-made real-world environment.

  • 06

    Cross-border perspective

Working between international brand teams and the realities of the Chinese market, in both directions.

  • 07

    Execution, not only advice

We do not stop at identifying the questions. We put the validation into the market ourselves.

Validation before expansion.

We are not here to convince every brand to enter China. Our role is to help you hear what the market is actually telling you, before you make a larger commitment to it.

We do not guarantee sales, distribution, market success or a particular result. A validation is qualitative work with a focused cohort — it is not a nationally representative study of the Chinese market, and it should not be presented internally as one.

What it can give you is real reactions from relevant consumers, gathered properly, read commercially, and reported without being bent towards the answer anyone was hoping for.

Considering China?

Start with evidence, not assumptions. Write to either co-founder with the product, the market you have proven it in and what you need to find out. We will come back on how a validation would be shaped.

Useful to include

  • The product
  • Markets already proven
  • Current price positioning
  • Who you believe the customer is
  • What you need to find out
  • Any China plans already under discussion
